SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) will release a new version of Internet Explorer, the world's most popular Internet browsing software, with new, built-in security features, Chairman Bill Gates (news - web sites) said on Tuesday.
In a speech at a major security conference here, Gates said Internet Explorer 7.0, with new anti-spyware features, will be released for preliminary testing this summer.
The move comes three years after Microsoft, the world's biggest software company, launched a major initiative to improve the reliability and security of its software, which runs on about 90 percent of all personal computers.
It's about time they got around to this. I think the IE Development Team was started back up sometime in mid-2004 (june, july, or whenever...), but this is the first official announcement that I've heard of, for IE7.
The IE blog also Has A Post talking about the new browser. Unfortunately, the only thing mentioned is security related enhancements. When will Microsoft TRUELY listen to the masses (as the blog post states), and begin updating IE's standards compliance for CSS, PNG, XHTML, and so many other standards that have been around for years?
